Getting to Milan from the airports

How to reach Milan from Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio: real journey times, options, and which airport to pick.

3 min readUpdated September 8, 2026

Milan has three airports and none of them is in the city. That is the first thing to know, because the transfer changes your day more than the flight does.

Linate (LIN)

The closest: eight kilometres from the centre. Since 2024 it has been connected by the M4 blue metro line, which reaches San Babila in about twenty minutes and lets you change for anywhere. Nothing to book: you tap through with an urban ticket or a contactless card.

This is the airport for domestic and scheduled European flights. If you can choose, choose it.

For our apartments: M4 to San Babila, then M1 towards Loreto for Città Studi and Porpora, or M1 and a change to the M5 for Bicocca. Forty to fifty minutes in total.

Malpensa (MXP)

Fifty kilometres north-west, the main intercontinental hub. Two terminals, linked by a free shuttle.

  • Malpensa Express — direct train to Milano Cadorna or to Central Station, about fifty minutes. It leaves from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The most reliable option: no traffic can touch it.
  • Coaches — several companies to Central Station, about an hour in normal traffic. Cheaper and more frequent, but at rush hour they can take considerably longer.
  • Taxi — a fixed fare into the city. Reasonable for three or four people, disproportionate alone.

For our apartments: Malpensa Express to Central Station, then M2 towards Loreto or M5 towards Bicocca. A little over an hour.

Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY)

The low-cost airport. It is not in Milan and it is fair to say so: it sits about fifty kilometres away, in another province.

  • Direct coaches to Central Station, roughly fifty minutes, very frequent including at night. In practice the only sensible option.
  • A rail link from the airport is under construction, but until it opens the train still means changing in Bergamo itself.

For our apartments: coach to Central Station, then metro. About an hour and a quarter.

Which to choose

Distance To the centre Notes
Linate 8 km ~25 min direct metro, nothing to book
Malpensa 50 km ~50 min direct train, very reliable
Bergamo 50 km ~50 min coach only, but frequent

If the fares are similar, Linate saves you a full hour of life across arrival and departure.

Arriving by train instead

The train is underrated. Milan is the hub of the Italian high-speed network: Rome in three hours, Florence in one hour forty, Turin in fifty minutes, Venice in two and a half. You arrive at Central Station, which is already inside the city and attached to two metro lines.

From Central, our apartments are ten to fifteen minutes away.

When you arrive

All our apartments have self check-in: there is no reception desk to catch before closing, and a delayed flight is not a problem. Entry instructions reach you before you arrive, directly from us.
